Hearing Protection

A survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that approximately 26 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 have noise-induced hearing loss caused by excessive noise exposure at work or during recreational activities. They also found that 16% of teens between the ages of 12 and 19 reported noise-induced hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss occurs when sounds that are too loud damage the inner ear. Even more, this damage can be caused by either brief high intensity sounds or longer lasting moderate intensity sounds.

Consequently, permanent damage can occur suddenly from a brief high level noise, such as a gun-shot or a firecracker near your ear. These sounds occur at 140+ decibel levels. In order to protect your ears from these high level noises, it is imperative that you wear hearing protection.

However, most hearing damage occurs more slowly as a result of prolonged noise exposure to much lower level noises. Noise levels over 85 decibels for an extended period of time can also result in permanent hearing loss. Lawn mowers, power tools, rock concerts, and motorcycles are just a few of the moderately high noise level sounds that can cause hearing loss with enough exposure time. In order to protect your hearing from these noise levels, it is recommended that you limit your exposure or wear hearing protection when being exposed for a long period of time.

Most noteworthy, the good news is that noise-induced hearing loss CAN be prevented. Our audiologists can provide a solution for your hearing protection needs. We offer both custom and universal hearing protection. Our audiologists will take an earmold impression of your ear when ordering custom hearing protection.

Our audiologists offer hearing protection for a variety of noisy environments. We fit industrial hearing protection for factories, construction, shooting, motorsports, aircraft, emergency vehicles, travel, and personal use. We also fit digital hearing protection for hunters to protect their hearing from high intensity gun-shot noise while amplifying soft environmental sounds, like leaves rustling. Our audiologists make hearing protection for band performances, concerts, dental work, and movies. For individuals with a history of ear infections, we also make ear plugs to prevent water from entering the ear canal during swimming, watersports, and showering.
